Julia Alvarez discusses her new novel, which is based on the lives of Salome Urena, a poet who at the age of 17 became one of the Dominican Republic’s national icons, and her daughter Camila, who spent her own career teaching at Vassar. The author talks about researching and writing about some of the most famous figures and turbulent times in her homeland.
